Tesla may be in big trouble

This write up by the Coyote Blog tells a troubling story.  I never did like the Tesla model,
conceptually, but given Musk's reputation, maybe he could make it work.

Reading through this article gives the strong impression that Tesla will fold, and it will
happen fairly soon.

What happens to Musk's reputation after that, is the thing that troubles me.

Off-grid post, 2.27.19, Dogs, motorcycles, and sun

This is something of a catchall post of the off-the-grid type.

As for dogs, there is a pit bull in the neighborhood, and it does get your attention.  Fortunately, it is a friendly dog.  This breed of dog is very powerful.  One look at this animal, and it is scary looking.  But it is friendly.  The first time I ever saw this dog, I went inside the trailer, and I got my walking cane.  Didn't know if I needed to defend myself, but I suppose even a cane wouldn't help much against a dog this powerful.  I'm not kidding either.

Anyway, having a dog like this may be enough to scare away mountain lions and coyotes, but desperadoes?  A dog is no match for a well armed two legged coyote.  Know what I mean, Vern?

A couple dogs may be a good thing out there, but what breed of dog?  I have a recommendation mentioned to me, but I don't know if I even would want a dog.  Anyway, something to think about.

While I was up and about, I tried getting on a motorcycle.  I am so stiff that I cannot manage it.  Now, a motorcycle might be good to take around, particularly if it doesn't have an electric starter.  An electric starter requires a battery--- dead battery, and you're nowhere.  Using a motorcycle to get around may be handier than using a car or a van.  You may be able to navigate a bad road more easily with one.

Besides those two subjects, there may be a way to test my preparations for the summer.  There's some power line work going on around here, and they are removing trees.  Less shade means more sun.  More sun means more water consumption for my swamp cooler.  Let's see how it holds up this summer.  Last summer, it got up to 109 degrees F.   Without shade, that's murder inside this trailer.

It's been two weeks since I left for the trip.  It already seems like ancient history.

Obligatory, 2.22.19

Today was a day off from blogging.  This post will be the only one for today for either of
the two blogs.

Instead of reading the news, I watched the reality TV series --- Life Below Zero.

It is quite addictive.  Now, I need more data.  Done burned up a crapful of my data.

What the hell.  I did what I wanted, and that is the benchmark.  If you do what you want,
what the hell is it to complain about?

Off-the-grid post, 2.21.19: TeeVee show and my moonshot

I can relate to the show, called "Life Below Zero", because it is about a harsh environment, and it is about people who are trying to live out there. My situation isn't as challenging, but it is challenging enough for a greenhorn like me. Perhaps after this much time, I am no longer quite the greenhorn I was; but then, on the other hand, I haven't spent much time on the property itself. Still pretty much of a greenhorn.

Just had a thought about constructing my cabin. FYI, the idea now is to build a cabin and a roof for the travel trailer. The trailer will be parked next to the cabin. The cabin will help keep the sun off the southern side of the trailer, and the trailer will keep the north wind off the southern side, which is where the cabin is. The cabin is to have glass facing the south, which will allow some passive heating in the winter. During the summer, the glass will be covered, so as to keep the temperatures from getting unbearably hot.

The idea is to prefab sections and fit them together here, and then haul them off to the location, where they will be reassembled.

But first, the foundation must be put into place. The idea there is to put the roof up first, then the rest will be built underneath. Therefore, the idea is to modularize the entire structure, and thus build it out piece-by-piece.

It isn't like worrying about polar bears trying to eat ya, but the desert does have its challenges. She is surrounded by ice, so she doesn't have a water issue. Water is a big issue in the desert, as well as the heat.

I got up to the second episode of the first year. The lady who lives by herself above the Artic Circle, just found out that most of her fuel was stolen. She counts on this to keep her alive. She has to figure out how to solve this problem, or she is in a lot of trouble.

This isn't reality TeeVee, but it is reality blogging, you might say.

Life below Zero

It is a TeeVee series that my brother recommended.  I refer to this brother as "Worf", because "Worf" in the Star Trek universe is a Klingon-- a warrior species.  My brother was in the military, which I was not.

Anyway, I have seen one of the episodes.  One that struck me is that there was a woman who went into a place in which she expected to see bears.  These might be polar bears, which will definitely eat you if they can.

The broader population of people out there, when they think of polar bears, they think they are like the bears in the Coca Cola commercial.  But these are dangerous beasts.  This woman gets dropped off by a plane, and she is alone against the elements, and she is a long, long way from everything.

Yet, here I am, in West Texas sometimes, and thinking I am doing something.  Ha, ha, ha....

People who go to Mars, or to the Moon, need to be like this woman.

Off-grid post 2.19.19 ; cinematic woes

A study of the videos reveals that my cinematic skills leave something to be desired.  I
resolve to do better in the future.

However, I do have a lot of video to look at now, which is of some comfort.

The attention recently has been in terms of maneuvering the trailer into a suitable spot.

The general area is decided, but details, details, details...

In addition to that, I am giving thought about a construction procedure for the foundation
pods.

For some reason, I am already running out of words.  But I wanted to put something up
anyway, so here it is.

Reality check

The preference here is to keep real, and not get into the weeds with a lot of impractical,
unworkable ideas.

However, that is precisely the kind of thing that I am prone to doing.  There is this often
need to prune out these unrealistic thoughts, and to focus on what is possible.

That last trip was such a time.  It was supposed to be simple, and it was.  But what about the
big picture?  How realistic is it for me to be doing something like this in my condition?

Furthermore, there is some worrisome news in the community out there.  Somebody is reported
missing.  One thing that I have been warned about is something like that.  There are bad
people out there who might be inclined to do some bad stuff.  If you aren't ready for it,
you can be victimized.

But she didn't appear to be the pushover type.  I didn't know her though, but only saw
her on the Facebook page.  There is a lot of unknown stuff about the situation.  No need to
speculate.

Truth is, stuff like that can happen anywhere.  It can happen in the big city, too.

Not to downplay the risk, though.  At all times that I am out there, I feel this sense
of risk.  Help could be a long way off.  Trouble can happen at any time.

For instance, in driving on those dirt roads, I knew my small car was not the best choice.
In two other times, places, and vehicles, I got stuck.  I got help, but I needed it.
There may not be help for hours here, if at all.  Indeed, a bad guy may find you first.

So, I think about this when I hear about a missing person out there.  And I think, is this
really something that I should be doing?  I've certainly heard many warnings about it.

I was really tense at first, but as the time wore on, I relaxed a bit.  However, if I had
heard about the missing person before I left home, I might have paused a bit.  You can
get accustomed to the new surroundings pretty fast, but then that doesn't mean that the risk
is less.  The perception may make the risk seem worse than it really is.

Somehow, a balance must be struck.  If you worry about every little thing that could go
wrong, you would never step outside.  Almost all of the time, nothing bad happens.  But sometimes it does.  I woke up in a hospital once after a car accident.  You don't have the control over this stuff that you think you do, and it could happen to you even if you think that kind of thing only happens to other people.

Still, one cannot allow this to rule your life.  If I let risk of an accident stop me, I
would have never gotten back into a vehicle again.  That is a hard way to live if you were
to try to live that way these days.

As with all things, you balance risk and reward.  It is the only way to stay functional.  It
may be tempting to curl up into a fetal position, but life must go on.

Road trip, 2.13 to 2.14.19

This post is about the recent visit to the property out West.  The objectives were to stay
longer, but had to be cut short because of physical problem.

The visit was only 3 hours.  During this time, a practice post hole was dug out.  This was
a bit surprising in its ease.  The ground may be a lot softer than it seemed.  The use of a
shovel does not seem to work, but this drill with augur bit works quite well.  If anything,
it could mean that the ground is too soft, and therefore, may not support the structure
intended.  This gives some food for thought.

Also during this visit, a potential location for the cabin was sketched out with waypoints
saved on GPS device.  A quick review of the waypoints suggest that it may be difficult to
translate onto a map.  In addition to this, a video was made tracing out the steps involved
in the turnaround.  A turnaround is needed so that the rear of the trailer is facing west.
Without the turnaround, the trailer end would be facing east.  The significance of this is
that the trailing end is the bathroom, with the opposite end as the bedroom.  The goal is
to keep the bedroom on the opposite end from the hot sun.

While there, I met a local, and we had a nice chat.  He says he is on Facebook, and
will look for me.

It appears more people are out there.  Also, I can make a call out if I have a booster.  It
almost works without one.

Finally, I made a video along the road on the way out.  It is of poor quality, but along
with the others, I now have a video record of the full length of the route.

The trip was quite tiring, but I did cover a lot of ground in a little over 24 hours.

World's largest 3-D printer used to print cars in East Tennessee

There aren't many pictures, and there isn't a whole lot of info about what it can produce.  Only that they can produce a vehicle with this technique.

I have seen a lot written about 3D manufacturing, but so far, there has been little to show for it.

Musk will go to Moon first

The idea is to reduce capabilities so as to be able to fund the entire project, which is costly.

A trip to the Moon would be less costly.
